YOUR GUIDE TO VOLLEYBALL BEYOND OUR CLUB
There is so much information out there on volleyball. From volleyball programs to positional camps, local to international competitions, provincial teams to national teams and more. See our links to resources surrounding these topics.

New for 2026, Volleyball BC has created a guide to Club Volleyball for both players and parents.

Volleyball BC is an excellent resource for our sport. They offer programs for athletes of all ages, providing pathways and development initiatives for coaches and officials.

Volleyball Canada is our sports national governing body. They host all national championships for both indoor and beach.

The international volleyball federation is a link to all countries in the world participating in our sport. They host numerous events including the VNL and World Championships.

Once a player has committed to participate with Seaside and has paid club fees, it is assumed by the club that the player will continue playing throughout the season. The club has committed registration fees, equipment, uniforms, warm-ups and travel arrangements that are not recoverable in the event the athlete quits the club and will be a financial burden to the remaining members of the team. It is our policy that if a player withdraws from the team after commencement of the season, the player will not receive a refund.
Occasionally athletes demonstrate a desire to play up an age level. At Seaside, we will consider moving an athlete up under one or more of the following circumstances;
- The athlete demonstrates superior volleyball skills at their current age level
- The athlete demonstrates the ability to fit in with older athletes at a social level
- The athlete demonstrates the athletic ability to play with older athletes
- The athlete is in the same grade and age level as the older athlete at school
- The athlete has participated in other sports with older athletes
- The club has a specific position to fill at the older age group and is unable to find a qualified player
If a player feels they fit into one or more of these categories, they MUST contact a Seaside coach or official a minimum of one week prior to tryouts. The coach and executive committee will discuss the request and advise the player prior to tryouts whether their request has been approved.
If the athlete is not selected after the first day for the age group they are trying out for, the athlete will be asked to move back to their current age group tryout session the following day.
They may start “looking” as early as 14U-15U. However, most start the searching and recruiting process at 16U.
The short answer is yes! Anyone has the chance to play varsity volleyball in college or university. However, it takes commitment, a passion for the sport and of course a high level of skill and game play. A solid base of academics is crucial, as you’ll need to juggle your time between classes, studying, practices and games. It isn’t easy, but the opportunities do exist if it’s what you really want.
- You’ll get a university or college education
- You’ll continue to play the sport you love
- You’ll improve your volleyball skills and game play exponentially
- You’ll get added support from your new coaches and teammates
- You’ll be eligible for financial assistance
- You’ll maintain a healthy lifestyle
- You’ll get free stuff!
- You’ll travel
- You’ll build your life resume
There are many ways you can help the club:
VOLUNTEER – Volunteer at major events like our annual banquet. Help out at club-level fundraising activities.
Assist with our locally run tournaments.
DONATE – We are always looking for ways to reduce the costs for our athletes. You can help by funding our scholarships for our graduating athletes. You can sponsor a table or donate prizes at our annual banquet. You can help out an athlete who needs financial support.
SPONSOR A TEAM – Pay for your son or daughter’s team gear, tournament entries or road trips. Fund their wind-up, cover their food costs. The opportunities are endless.
PARTNERSHIP – Our membership reach is large and vast. Partner with us to maximize exposure for your business. Financial contributions and/or gift-in-kind products and services that meet our needs and speak to our culture.
Contact us for more information.
There are several options:
- Kidsport provides grants to kids from families facing financial barriers to help cover the cost of their sport registration fee so they can experience the joy of a season of sport.
- Sport4Life grant program removes financial barriers to sports for kids from low-income backgrounds.
Payments can be made by credit card (VISA or M/C) or by e-transfer.
Yes. Once your son or daughter has been selected to a team (between November 15-December 7), you will be prompted to make an initial payment of approximately 50% of the fees. The remainder is paid by mid-February.
Costs for road trips and national championships are not included in the club fees. These costs also include expenses for coach’s travel at the team’s expense.
Club fees include the cost of uniforms, warm-ups, gym rental, tournament fees, and equipment; coaching education, per diems and honorariums; annual banquet, club management, GST and administration fees.
Our club fees vary by age group. For the 2025-26 season, our club fee cost range from $1250 to $2000.
The number of players per team ranges from 12-14.
Skill and competitiveness in game play is important but we are also looking at coachability, enthusiasm, athleticism and potential.
After you check-in, you will wait until the gym is available. A coach will direct all the participants into the gym. The tryout will include a dynamic warm-up, ball-skill drills and game play. Coaches and evaluators will be observing all the participants throughout the session. Coaches may approach you to give some encouragement, feedback and/or direction. If someone doesn’t speak with you, it doesn’t mean you haven’t been seen. There will be a lot of players at tryouts. At the end of tryouts, the lead coach will meet with all participants and tell you about the next steps.
No need to worry. There are many kids who try out for the first time just like you! The tryouts are structured to make it as easy as possible for you to have a positive experience. Once you get on the court, you’ll be just fine! It’ll be fun!
Everyone trying out has an equal opportunity to make one of our Seaside teams.
Wear a good pair of volleyball/indoor court shoes and volleyball knee pads. Do NOT bring a ball.
$45 (including GST). $50 for walk-ons.
Yes. All of our teams that compete in the Volleyball BC tournaments must be selected in a tryout format. We do not run a house league at this time.

We highly recommend purchasing a quality pair of volleyball shoes. Brands to consider are Asics, Mizuno, Nike and Adidas. Make sure they are designed for indoor court use and/or “volleyball” shoes. Knee pads are also highly recommended. There are numerous brands and types. Stick to the mainstream sports manufacturers.
Yes. Anyone who wishes to try out for an age group higher is welcome to do so. However, we strongly recommend that you try out for your current age group first and let the evaluators determine if it makes sense for you to play up an age group.
At Seaside we will consider moving an athlete up under one or more of the following circumstances;
If the athlete is not selected after the first day for the age group up he/she is trying out for, the athlete will be asked to move back to their current age group tryout session the following day.
Typically athletes play within their own age group. For example, if a boy or girl is born in 2012, they would play in the 15U age group in the 2027 season. This ensures that the athletes play with kids in their own age and school grade. However, (with the exception of 12U and 13U athletes who must play in their age group year) 15U and up athletes born after September 1, 2012 can play down an age group. For example, a boy or girl born in 2012, September 1st to December 31st has the option to play in the 14U age group. While this option is available, most play within their own age group.
Volleyball is no different than other community team sports. Players are expected to attend practices and tournaments throughout the season. If you play on a 12-14U team (fair play rules) and miss too many practices or tournaments you are being unfair to your teammates who regularly show up. If you are playing on an older age group team and you miss practices, the harder it will be for coaches to give you court time. While we do work with other sports schedules, make sure you don’t have any conflicts.
The club fees vary by age group. Costs range from $1250 to $2000, mostly due to the amount of tournaments attended and the number of athletes per team. These costs include uniforms, warm-ups, gym rental, tournament fees, and equipment; coaching education, per diems and honorariums; annual banquet, club management and administration fees. Volleyball BC membership is paid separately through the association website. Costs for road trips and national championships are above and beyond. Many of our teams attend the national championships, also at an additional cost.
See the fee schedule for the previous 2025 season below:
12U – $1250
13U – $1450
14U – $1550
15U – $1900
16U – $2000
17&18U – $2000
NOTE: Fees do NOT include cost for road trips or national championships. Nationals road trip (if applicable) costs around $1200/athlete. Additional road trips for 14U-18U can range from $200 to $1000.
There are no youth volleyball club leagues in BC. In contrast, a typical club volleyball season includes teams participating in 4 to 7 sanctioned and non-sanctioned tournaments on weekends plus a regional and provincial championship tournaments (2-day weekend events). In addition, depending on team age category and event location, many of our teams participate in a national championship tournament in a major city in Canada.
Seaside teams practice two to three times a week, usually weekday evenings and in many cases weekends. There are multiple locations our teams practice at including South Surrey elementary and high school locations.
- Easy access, ample parking, well appointed, quality fixtures
- Comfortable Environment – bright white ceilings, LED & natural lighting, radiant heating, ceiling fans
- Ample Court Space – synthetic cushioned maple sport flooring; full sized main court, convertible to 2 regulation-sized width courts; fully adjustable floor-to-top net system
- Volleyball Training Aids – Net zone & ball catch systems; coaches’ boxes; vertical jump touch tester; circuit training tools & more!
Club volleyball has a range of start and end dates. Generally, most clubs start in early/mid November, commencing with try-outs. The season can end as late as the end of May, for those teams wishing to partake in national championships. Practices start in December, ramping up in January with tournament play, regional, provincial and national championships scheduled in April and May.
The answer is yes! Parents, don’t be deceived by memories of elementary school volleyball, six players on a side, standing motionless like scarecrows waiting for the ball to come to you. Volleyball is a multi-faceted, athletically demanding sport. Practices are often fast paced, with plenty of cardiovascular exercises and movements. Running, jumping and “hitting the floor” are all part of the sport. To perform at your best during a game, you must be ready physically and mentally.
In volleyball, you go to the ball, you don’t wait for the ball to come to you. Watch a college, university or our national teams play. You may be surprised to see some of the best conditioned athletes of any sport playing volleyball.
Yes we are. Volleyball BC is the official Provincial Sport Organization (PSO) for British Columbia. Seaside Volleyball Club has been a member “in good standing” with Volleyball BC for the past 23 years. For more information on the criteria for annual renewal of our club’s membership with Volleyball BC, go to VBC.
