At the recent 2019 Volleyball BC Hall of Fame awards, two Seaside members were recognized for their successes. Julianna Penner received the Rising Star Coaching of the Year award. Julianna is the current assistant coach of the Douglas College Royals Varsity Women’s team. She is also Seaside’s 17U Surf assistant coach. Julianna will be graduating this year at Douglas with a coaching certification and degree. She has sites on obtaining her teaching degree with continued contribution to coaching volleyball in BC.
Michael Dowhaniuk received the Ray Lepp Athlete Excellence Award, a scholarship awarded to an up and coming athlete. Michael had an amazing past year captaining Semi to provincial gold, Seaside Surf to provincial gold (named MVP) and national silver, and leading Canada’s Junior National team with a bronze at the NORCECA Continental championship. He is a formidable starter on UBC’s Varsity team, recently named to the conference all-rookie team and second team allstar. Michael joins some Seaside alumni who were presented this prestigious award including Chris MacIver (13U Six Pack coach), Kyle Donen (former Seaside coach) and Rudy Verhoeff (Seaside’s camp coach).
